Cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova in her capsule, named Sea Gull, flew for 70 hours 50 Gallery Intro minutes to become the first woman in space. She completed 48 orbits around the Earth. After her mission, Tereshkova married Vostok 3 cosmonaut Andrian G. Nikolayev. Though this was the last of the Vostok missions, it marked a big first: the first female in space.
